Day 2 of Bedtime Story: Creative Writing & Art Camp at Classroom Matters

The Art Edition:
The students are excited about writing and illustrating their Children's books and so am I!
On Monday we looked at books and  different illustration styles, tecniques and mediums artists use. We experimented with different tecniques and materials exploring pencil, sharpies, and watercolors. Students learned how to incorporate illustration into letters by creating  their name as flowers, animals and patterns. The campers all received newsprint sketchpads and spent the end of the day sketching ideas for their book characters. On Tuesday we continued exploring different art mediums so each individual can choose a material they enjoy using the most. We got tempera paints out, learned how to mix colors and created paintings. We also made bold oil pastel drawings on black paper. Students pulled out their sketchbooks and we practiced drawing faces that show different emotions. I've been talking to the campers individually and working with them to develop their character and background art and some of them are already sketching illustrations for their book.

Walt Disney Elementary - Creative Writing Excerpts!

Aarushi

Creeeek...I suddenly woke up in the middle of the night screaming AAAAA!

But when I got out of bed I heard a noise downstairs. I tiptoed to the bottom of the steps and I saw the fridge open and the tomato sauce was out and the mustard. And the radishes, cucumbers, lettuce, and the ice, and everything was out.

All the food started moving. They started fighting. The ketchup squirted everything. Then the blue police potatoes said “Clean up!” because it was morning. Then my mom came and said “Did you clean the kitchen?”  That was a mystery.

Maison

My name is Maison and I am in my secret hideout where I found a dinosaur book. This is the story.

I don't know if I can time travel. Can you help me? You see, right now you are on a hill. Ah! There's a dinosaur here!!!!

“Oh, hi Maison,” came a voice form the dinosaur. It's a girl. She has a secret name but nobody knows; her name is Meeeeeeee. Meeeeeeee can give me a ride to the talking rock. The talking rock can tell me the answer to everything but all he said was “Look down for a cool clue.”

I looked down, found a clue, read it, and it said “You.” That's it. Then I fell into a bush. And guess where the next clue was? Right beside  me and it said “can time.”

“That's confusing,” I said. So I got out of the bush and suddenly I found a cave. I looked inside and there was the third clue. It said “travel.” Right next to that, it said “Put all these clues together and you can time travel!”

End

Bella

Bella's Poem

My secret is made from noise flame.
It slides through the buttery pan.
It is as cheesy as a cheese ball.
It can have great taste.

I found it at an ancient anchor down below.
There were 85 of them holding on to the anchor.

Some will float away.

Some will get slurped up.

My secret can turn invisible.
It can jump the Great Wall of China.
It can run a thousand miles per minute.

It eats 20 gigantic crispy meals a day.

If my secret gets lost
the whole universe will die.
They would be starving in the city.
They would die.

Ode to a Dragon Fruit

Like it is day, but it tis night

you play, you are red and juicy

You are the great dragon fruit

You blow your fire at the weeds

so they will not take water and make you unable to grow.

One day you got sold at the market

You were sad like the swan who lost its feathers.

Then you got stewed and brewed

and that was the end of the Dragon Fruit!

Ode to Cherries

You are the color of dark roses.

Inside of you, you have a white heart

like a seed waiting to sprout.

You are in the shape of a very small apple

and your twin is esactly like you, red and juicy.

Ren (Descriptive passage about food)

This chocolate cake you see has a nutty, minty and silky texture and taste to it. It had a sticky, buttery essence to it and a sugary sharpness. The icing is an oily, melting fresh taste. The swirls are peanut butter, and that is creamy and extremely delicious.

Ode to Baguette

Your sourness

is beyond compare.

The crunchy shell

that you wear.

And your insides,

drying gel.

And you tell

of the dough,

the oven.

There is one

word that

describes you.

And that is

Sourdough.

Rice with scales

Fish like a pillow

Early morning a fresh start

A crown of fish eggs

lay as bright as the sun

Orange and yellow

red and white

Ode to Donut

You are rounfd like a bird's nest

comforting the babies

So lovely so full yet

missing something

A hole in the middle,

everyone loves you yet

you get blamed for so

many things

Many flavors

all personalities

A hole in the middle

taken from the start.

I sympathize with you

Take you

in my hands to comfort you

You are greasy

Sweet.

18 Reasons - Creative Writing Excerpts!

Pb&pen

Assignment: personification

A. Personify “hungry”:

1. What does hungry look like? He is a purple pumpkin that has only a mouth because all he does is steal food from other people.

2. One day I got a phone call from my belly. I didn’t know what I was doing, but I answered it!! It sounded horrible (probably because its mouth was full). It was Hungry! I thought there was no such thing as hungry. Well at 9:30 he came. He didn’t knock. He just came in! Finally it was dinner time (it took a long time for him to sit down and I was getting hungry!). I opened the refrigerator and …there was nothing there!!!! I looked over at Hungry; he had food all around his mouth. “Errrr!!”, I said. I started chasing him out of the kitchen and out of the door and around the block until we came to a vent. Then he jumped into it. Then I reached into it. “Yuck!” it was wet and slimy. Is that really where he lives? That is probably why he smells.

B. Personify a food you hate

Hi. I am Mysterious Despicable Bob. I am a tomato. I make people gag with my slimy gooey slippery seeds. I am a good shade of a friendly inviting red on the outside. On the inside I have a long curly villainous mustache.

Assignment: Use tasting food to inspire an alliteration

The crazy chocolate captures coldness colliding crazily.

Pickles particular perfect taste creates permanent perfection.

The poisonous preposterous pear went to Pennsylvania.

The appalling apricot ate my apple.

Assignment: Choose a food and write a story about its life cycle

I, Will the wheat seed, was sitting in a sack with my two thousand family members. Then some strange man dumped me in the ground to grow. Every day an airplane would fly by and spray me with chemicals that hurt him. Slowly by slowly I started growing. Then one day my cousin got ate by insects. The same thing happened to twenty of my cousins. When the man found out that my cousins had been ate, he was furious. The next day the airplane came by as always but this time it sprayed the most harmful chemical ever which hurt do much. Then I was sedated. When I woke up I was in the shape of a square and I was in a bag that had “bread” written on it. Then I was picked up by a man and put in some metal box and then the man pressed a level down and I fell down. Then the walls started getting really hot. Then I became crispy. Then I was taken out of the box and the man bit me. He kept biting me until there was nothing left of me. That was the sad story of Will, aka William.

Lakeshore (4-5)

Tom - Personification

Once there was a clock, hanging on the wall of a clock shop in Denver. One day the shop owner tried to fix the clock because it was broken. The shop owner took a hammer and opened the clock, but a spring flew out and hit the shop owner in the eye. The shop owner got so mad that he crushed the clock with his hammer. That was the end of the clock.

Dylan - Freewrite

I don't know what goes on under the ground but I suspect dead, stupid, deranged, angry zombie cows kill dragons with "49ers" written on their backs. I bet the dragons with the 49ers on their backs go deeper. Then the dragons with "49ers" on their back turn into flying, killing zombie pigs and the flying, killing zombie pigs watch the Superbowl.

Hannah - Secret Poem

My secret is made from the purest of gold, the whitest of pearls and the deepest of water.

I found it lying on my bed in the winter, sleeping on my pillow.

This secret can destroy my dog, it can split the sun and shoot lasers from the sky.

If I lost this secret I would crack the air and I would hide with my dog at the midnights of Taco Tuesday.

Emma - I Remember

I remember

being locked in my brother's room,

he and his friends were laughing

I remember

hoping for that one

thing

I remember

being too scared to even try

Andrea - I Remember

I remember when my brother took a tooth out with a sock that was dirty.

I remember when I accidentally took a one hundred dollar bill from my uncle.

I remember when my little cousin was born. I remember that they wouldn't let me in the room to see him.

I remember when I played for a team called The Golden Stars.

I remember my first day in this school. I was really shy.

I remember when my whole entire family went to Las Vegas and the Grand Canyon.

Zoe - Free Association Word Exchange Story

One time there was a dynamite explosion in Canada. It happened because a man was trying to catch some fish for his dinner. When he got home, he saw a red dragon with sparkles coming out of it around his neighborhood. It looked like it belonged in a Chinese New Year parade.

Odes

Ode to Jolly Ranchers, by Luke
I love you Jolly Ranchers.
You bring your wild flavor to my mouth,
Even though I don't know what it is.
When you plop onto my tongue,
My taste buds run right to you.
You last forever in my stomach.
I shall never, ever let you go.
You are so smooth and yet so bumpy,
I fall to my knees before you.
Jolly Ranchers, you are my hero.

Ode to Nerds, by Pearce
Oh Nerds, you are so small.
You are like a dream come true.
Oh Nerds, you are so cool.
Please, Nerds, take over the world.
You make parties in my mouth and all over the world!
Oh Nerds, there's nothing tastier than you.

Ode to Stinky, Salty Cheese, by Marco
Its smooth, silky sensation
Rocks my mouthbuds.
It can be so good,
It can cure any sickness.
It will launch you to the moon
With one salty lick.

Onomatopeia & Alliteration

Sushi, by DJ

Munch is what happens when I chew.
Swish is the sound of me spitting it out.
Bonk is what happens when I hit my head trying to run away.
I hate sushi!

Avocados, by Oliver
The awful otter ate the avocados in awe.

Cheese Broccoli, by Max
The chipmunk had chunky chocolate crackers with his cheese broccoli.

Personification

Ick, by Jordan
This is a story about Ick the red bean soup. Ick smells so bad he tries to run away from himself. He likes to sing, but he knows he's really bad at it. Every day, Ick jogs around his bowl in Bowltown, even though he's as slow as a snail. Ick has skin which is as red as blood and a lot of big bumps that look like acne. He also has black specks that I think are hair, but I can't be sure.

One day, Ick was jogging around his bowl when he slipped and fell onto the floor. He realized he didn't know how to get back to Bowltown, so he started to walk. A few hours later, he saw a chair and climbed onto a table. He was surrounded by dishes and realized he must be in Bowlsville. Since he was tired, he decided to stay...

The Five Senses

If Pasta Ruled the World, by Alex
Darren Black was a guy who loved pasta. Then one day, pasta started ruling the world.

"This is totally awesome!" said Darren. But all of a sudden, pasta became that evil villain. It turned the humans of Earth into slaves. A group of humans escaped to the underground, however, and formed a rebellion. Darren joined it, and his weapon of choice was a fork and knife.

"I've got that one," whispered Darren. He speared a piece of ravioli, cut it, and ate it. "That was tasty," Darren said. "All right, I have eyes on Emperor Tortellini." Darren began to chomp his way through the tortellini's bodyguards.

To be continued...

If Apples Ruled the World, by Marley
If apples ruled the world, things would be very different. Houses would be hollowed out apples. Instead of rain, apple juice would fall from the sky. There would be apple lightning and apple skin clouds instead of thunder. Pets would have apple skin collars, and breakfast, lunch and dinner would all be apples. No one would have braces because it's hard to eat apples with braces. The White House would be the Apple House.

All of a sudden, I woke up. "THAT WAS THE BEST DREAM EVER!" I shouted. Oops. I had forgotten about my brother, who came in looking like a cat in water. Thank goodness our parents were still asleep. I quickly ate an apple slice and smiled.
